Retaliate!
I have noticed that some members do not return fire when engaged in battle. If you have three ships on the table, even if one of them has already suffered a direct hit, you can still return fire with that ship and any other ship or facility that has weapons at that location. You may only be able to damage, but it will force your opponent to repair his ship. Retaliation works even better when you have a battle bridge. Many of the tactics will kill people or disable certain attributes on their ship. So, don't be afraid to fire back!
