September 30 2001 Game Notes
Winners: Romulan x2, Federation (Klingon deck), Bajoran, Ferengi, Non-aligned
"I'm getting pummeled over here!"
In the first game, the excitement was over near the neutral zone border where Admiral Froelich was taking on Praetor Terrill. The Federation was off to a quick start when an Admiral Riker allowed the download from Q's Tent 3 Enterprises and 1 matching commander. After the game it was also admitted that the Supernova that the Admiral favors was already in his hand. The game quickly turned to the Romulan fortune when a well placed Sheliak dilemma turned up underneath the Federation outpost mission destroying everything there after 6 turns. "It was just a lucky guess at where (he) might seed his outpost," Terrill admitted. With a Devil, the Praetor nullified a hard-earned Horg'n and reduced the Admiral's points 35 to -22 with several point reducing dilemmas and a destroy radioactive garbage scow. The Admiral managed to rescue 4 ships and a scarce crew from the Sheliak and go "balls to the wall" against another mission and several "killer" dilemmas which destroyed 2 ships and caused the loss of several crew members. After a long fight, the Federation earned a well-deserved 35 points bringing the score 35 to 13. Despite enduring the huge losses, the Federation managed to claw their way back from the dead by resurrecting an outpost and rebuilding a fleet. After 3 agreed point extensions, the Romulans claimed a 205 to 58 victory.
"I believe this game to be a fluke. If I had encountered the same set of circumstances that the Admiral had, I don't believe my deck would have fared nearly as well. Clearly Admiral Riker is an important strength in his deck as it helped to avert tragic disaster. It served as a lesson for me because it made me realize that I am not prepared for the early on loss of my Romulan Outpost. I don't think for a moment that my Federation Deck will stand a chance in next week's cold war. Kudos to the Admiral for doing as well as he did." - Praetor Terrill
The Ferengi was on the ball in the first game quickly scoring 50 points before any other player could complete a single mission. Leejr Terrys pulled out most of his events and interrupts from the top of his deck which may have predetermined his fate. On a time call from the referees, the Ferengi were named the winners and Non-aligned scored in a first to score lightning round. Ferengi: 50 Non-Aligned: 30 Bajoran: 0.
Gre'thor will be paved with your ashes!
Out for blood, the Federation called upon their allies in the Klingon Empire in the second game in a one-on-one with the Non-aligned Coalition. The Admiral supernovaed the non-aligned outpost fairly early in the game, however, with a spare outpost tucked away in his deck, Lt Skidmore easily recovered from this tragedy. Despite supernova-ing the Non-aligned outpost, the mega-large Klingon fleet, and the slow progress of the Non-aligned fleet, the coalition pulled off 60 points to the Empire's 105.
In a final three-player game, the Romulans invaded Bajoran and Ferengi space. The game was decidedly one-sided as the Bajorans and the Ferengi seemed more interested in having it out with each other than the larger Romulan Empire. Terrill quickly picked up 80 points and 2 artifacts from missions that did not have any dilemmas underneath them! The Romulan Empire scored 150-0-0 despite an untimely hangup on Iconia. The fleet then moved quickly to blast the Ferengi out of the stars - which effectively put them out of the game. Bajor scored 30 for the home team despite having the vessel they traveled in commandeered and used against the Ferengi in battle.
Everyone who wanted a prize for winning got it. About 200 cards were given away in all. Next week, for winning a grudge match, you will receive a starter deck of cards. This will also include the Praetor and the Admiral for the first time.
